Webinars Killed the Speaking Star: A Look Inside a Step by Step Process Transforming Bland Virtual Talks into Sellable, Memorable Experiences

Virtual events are cheap imitations of their high-impact, in-person cousins. Every bureau, client, speaker, sponsor must fight against that stigma. The longer we allow webinars to become the substitute for unique, memorable offline events, the more at-risk our entire industry becomes.

This cycle has to end. The thing is, it shouldn't have started. Yes, virtual keynotes are different than in-person -- but different shouldn't mean worse.

In this IASB exclusive discussion, bestselling author Shane Snow (Dream TeamsSmartcuts) and speaker Jay Acunzo (ex-Google/ESPN, current podcast and documentary host/producer) will go inside the process that can help us kill the stigma -- and the boring webinar.

This is a solved problem. Thousands of creators have mastered the art we now must master too: holding the attention of a distracted attendee when they aren't physically in the room with you. Shane and Jay will talk through a system they use to deliver enhanced keynotes, borrowing from podcasting and documentary masters, causing attendees to tweet things like this: "By far the best webcast I've seen (and I've seen a TON lately)." And this: "Differentiation has become even harder. Beyond impressed with what I'm witnessing."

Great keynotes have huge emotional and practical impact. The low-fi experience of talking heads on a webcam and static slides simply won’t cut it. Bookings will decline, sponsors will retreat, and a negative cycle will continue. It starts and stops with the one thing attendees pay to receive: transformational experiences.

Virtual keynotes will always be different. Different shouldn't mean worse. For us to thrive ... it can't.

Acclaimed journalist and entrepreneur Shane Snow has helped expose gun traffickers and gender discrimination, eaten only ice cream for weeks in the name of science, and been variously captured and escorted by armed guards as he's explored and photographed abandoned buildings and tunnels around the world.  Snow currently serves as a board member of the media technology company, which works with Fortune 500 brands and creative people around the world, and the investigative journalism nonprofit The Hatch Institute.  Snow’s writing has appeared in Wired Magazine, The New Yorker, GQ, Fast Company, Advertising Age, The Washington Post, Time, and many others. He's the bestselling author of Smartcuts and The Storytelling Edge, and recently, his most important book yet: Dream Teams, a journey through science and history that reveals the counterintuitive science that explains what separates groups that simply manage to get by from those that get better together—and how we might change our companies, communities, and the world through it.  Snow has been named a "Digital Maverick" by Details Magazine, called a "Wunderkind" in the New York Times, and honored as a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. Originally from Idaho, he studied journalism at Columbia University and lives in New York City.
