There Was a Glitch in the Last Version of
BUREAU TALK

The reason for resending this issue of Bureau Talk is that we discovered a glitch with the type style. Some people see a different version of the newsletter than what is intended. Since sending it out, we learned that we must be consistent in the type style and stay with one or two specific type styles. I apologize for the inconvenience and hope you find this version useful and easy to read.

It would be helpful if you would let us know if you are having difficulty with the newsletter or any other email communication that is sent out. We can only correct errors or problems if we are aware of them.

President's Message
by Rich Gibbons

The recent IASB Convention in Ft. Worth was an outstanding success with valuable programming and a record turnout. Thanks to Gail Davis, Shayna Stillman, Jim Montoya, Pam Bernard and all those who were involved in creating a memorable event!

Reflecting on the various programs we all enjoyed in Texas, I¹m continually struck by the dialogue from the Ethics Session. The use of Michael Tamer's wireless response system, and the inherent anonymity achieved, highlighted the vast number of perspectives and divergent opinions surrounding how best to work together, as well as about marketing speakers and the use of their names on the internet. The confusion surrounding these issues will only be exacerbated by neglect.

Based on opinions shared at the convention and in evaluations, we need to start a dialogue, and work toward aligning our varied perspectives. We¹ve heard you, and as I shared in Ft. Worth, your board will work hard to advance this and other goals. Integrity and fairness will serve as our foundation. Please share your opinion and join the dialogue.

Thanks to those who have already stepped forward to serve on committees. There's always room for more members to make a difference, so whether you're a new member or a longstanding one, do consider active involvement in your association by participating on a committee.

I look forward to working with you all to make our rewarding industry even more so.

2007 IASB Convention
By Gail Davis, Convention Chair

IASB Annual Convention Summary
Gail Davis, Gail Davis and Associates and 2006 IASB Convention Chair

I labored, gave birth and am now suffering post partum depression. I remember now why I got out of event planning. It takes so much energy, becomes a part of your every waking moment, and when it is over you are left with a hole. Okay, that is a little dramatic!! LOL.

Truth is …..I had a blast preparing the annual convention in Ft. Worth and have really enjoyed hearing from so many of you.

If you were there, you know we had a great time and here’s a reminder of the content and experiences now that you’re back at work. If you missed it, then here’s the highlight reel. I hope you’ll attend next year after you see the breadth of what we covered.

THURSDAY

The conference began with a special Pre-conference session: Your Bureau: What Works? What Doesn’t? This was a great and well-attended session. We held an open forum brainstorming issues to discuss and then opened it up for everyone’s input. It was very impressive how helpful everyone was in giving information to help their peers solve problems. We even had one bureau owner who admitted to being a recovering lawyer who offered his legal perspective…….free. Simply amazing!

The convention officially kicked off with a high energy, musical ice breaker led by Ken Medema where everyone had a chance to literally rub shoulders and get to know each other.

Nando Parrado was our first keynote speaker who shared his inspirational story of survival. I am pleased so many of you have taken the time to convey to me the impact his presentation made on you.

Jim Keppler, Scott Chesson and William Grimsinger led us through discussion on Tax And Procurement Issues. Short of scaring this Texan to death in discussing the upcoming franchise tax, they provided us with some great insight into key issues that are heading our way.

Simultaneously, our record breaking number of international bureaus gathered, headed by Leanne Christie and Leo van der Kant, to discuss challenges and opportunities with international bookings.

Thursday night we all headed over to the Four Day Weekend Theater for An Evening of Improv! The cast did an outstanding job of making us laugh and helping us get to know each other. There will be a whole new series of inside jokes about Blanche Powell and her “unnamed partner,” and Frank Candy and his Big @#$ phone and super spring sneakers. It was a good reminder that after a long day of brain food, conference attendees can really benefit from being together and laughing just for fun.

FRIDAY

Friday was a full day that began with Ken Medema’s musical recap “Book and Speak”. Ken was able to continue to show our attendees how he weaves his musical interpretation and responses throughout a conference. He kicked things off, responded to Nando, did a recap of Thursday evening and also responded to Clyde Fessler. It really added a continuity and energy to our time together.

Clyde Fessler was our Friday a.m. keynote speaker. He shared much of the Harley Davidson story and perspective on how marketing strategy and effort can recreate a brand. The morning rounded out with a very creative Ethics Session with Rich Tiller, Frank Bucaro and Michael Tamer. I thought the kick off with Kelly Wick speaking as “Truth” was extremely clever and thought provoking. The use of anonymous polling technology to measure our audiences’ take on ethical issues was quite revealing. Unfortunately we realized we have to better learn how to work together with more of a base of trust.

Scott Klososky and Jim Young did a great job with the Technology Session. My head was spinning after Scott presented a content packed session on new websites, industry challenges and opportunities. Check out his Resources section on his site for some of his favorite new websites. My favorite moment was Scott’s dance interpretation of a mash up using Nelly and Lynard Skynard! You had to be there!!

We had a star studded panel featuring Don Epstein, Dick Hall, Peter Jacobs, Randy Nolan and Jan Tavitian, sharing their experience with the nuances and complexities of Booking Celebrity Talent. I think we all left with a greater appreciation of the fact that celebrities speak as an avocation not a vocation. That fact alone creates a very different dynamic in terms of priorities, fees and availability.

AWARD WINNERS

Our Awards Banquet was emceed by Bob Eubanks who also did a brief version of his entertaining keynote complete with great clips from the Newlywed Game show. The awards presentations included Scott Chesson of Washington Speakers Bureau receiving the Dottie Walters Helping Hand Award (presented earlier in the week), Duane Ward received the Presidents Award, Jim Rittenhouse received the Above and Beyond Award. Blue Feather Management, Martin Bastian Productions, Ovations International, Palestrarte – A Arte da Communicacao, Speakers’ Spotlight and The Speakers Network all received the Community Service Award and Dick Hall received the John Palmer Award. In addition, Dottie Walters, IASB Founder, was recognized with the IASB Lifetime Achievement Award. Dottie’s daughter, Jeanine Walters, was at the banquet to receive the award on behalf of Dottie.

I was honored to receive the Pace Setter Award. I very much appreciate the award, the recognition and your participation in the convention. All the planning in the world cannot create the onsite energy…that comes from the attendees. We are a great group and we should all be very proud of our association.

We imagined, we lead and we connected…………until next year……..Gail

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Many of you had booked speaker, Richard Carlson, in the past and apparently some bureaus were not aware that Richard died in 2006. Below is his obituary. At the family’s request we are including this in the newsletter so you will not be making the mistake of trying to book him.

“Richard Carlson, best selling author, of 30 books including the phenomenally successful Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff series and the just published, Don’t Get Scrooged, died suddenly on December 13, 2006, of a pulmonary embolism resulting in cardiac arrest while enroute to New York. He was 45. Like the message in his books, the focus of Dr. Carlson’s life was on gratitude, generosity and kindness. He embodied those traits in everything he did. For more information, please visit his website at www.dontsweat.com.”
