President's Message
by Shayna Stillman
Dear Members,
I hope 2007 has had a great start for you!!
This month you received SPEAKER Magazine - the newly revamped publication of the National Speakers Association. I hope you will take the time to look at it and use it to gain more insight into the world of NSA.
The decision to send out SPEAKER Magazine to IASB members was a result of the NSA/IASB Council meeting held this past November. I am a member of this group that meets each year to discuss ways our organizations can deepen and strengthen our partnership for mutual growth, cooperation, and benefit.
Volunteering offers a chance for unexpected benefits. It has been a rewarding and educational experience for me being a member of the Council. I see it as another way I can contribute and learn.
I encourage each of you to think about ways you can be more involved in IASB and contribute to the overall good of our industry.
IASB committees are important to the functioning of our association and we rely on volunteers to make the committees work. Ethics, Membership, Education, Showcase, and Public Relations are a few examples of where you could lend your expertise and time. Perhaps an article for our e-Newsletter ?
To those who already volunteer please accept my heartfelt thanks for your time and contributions. To those who want to get involved, please let Jim Montoya, Executive Vice President, or me know how we can help.
Very best wishes,
Shayna

2007 IASB Convention
By Gail Davis, Convention Chair
I hope everyone is making plans to attend the 2007 IASB Convention in Fort Worth, Texas. Downtown Fort Worth is a great destination and we have lots of valuable activities that will help us all Imagine, Lead and Connect.
We selected the conference theme for 2007, “Imagine. Lead. Connect.”, because these action words so aptly describe the web of motions essential in our professional speakers bureau industry. We have some great sessions planned that will help all of us Imagine betters ways to run our businesses through technology, marketing and maintaining ethics. It is our sincere hope that these sessions allow each attendee to leave this conference poised as Leaders in our industry. We have created some excellent opportunities for networking and Connecting to talent, clients and to our fellow members.
I am so excited about each of the breakout sessions. The cooperation, interest and enthusiasm from all of the moderators, panelists and presenters are very energizing. It is a personal honor for me to bring Nando Parrado in as one of our keynote speakers. And Clyde Fessler is one of the best for sharing insight into the importance of marketing and branding. If you haven’t been to a conference with Ken Medema providing musical recaps, you are in for a treat. If you have experienced Ken’s talent, you know each performance to be unique.
The Thursday night outing to Four Day Weekend will be a convention highlight. I could go on and on. We have laid the ground work; now all we need is your energy, insight and attendance. Please make plans today to attend your IASB Annual Conference. See y’all in Texas!

Carole Van Brocklin sharing the "Real Thing" with the Right Honorable Jean Chretien, former Prime Minister of Canada
This “boomer” is retiring while I've still got some "git up and go" left in me! I will be at Leading Authorities through the end of January.
My husband and I are looking forward to this new chapter in our lives but aren't sure how long being together 24/7 will last! Some of our friends think it will last at least two weeks .... others are betting on 3 days!!! I'll still work from my home office with Leading Authorities on special projects from time to time as my retirement schedule permits.
We will stay put in the wonderful state of Iowa and continue to enjoy our getaway place in Wisconsin. I'm looking forward to utilizing my talents volunteering at my grandsons' school, at our church and at my mom's nursing home. We want to spend more quality time with our grandchildren and with my 95 year old mother and we will continue to travel. Feel free to put me on your
newsletter e-mailing list. It's been terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrific knowing all of you!
If you ever make it to Iowa, let me know and I'll buy you a cup of coffee! My personal contact information is:

Speaking Industry in the Media By Theresa Beenken, Vice President Global Speakers Agency
Two major US newspapers, USA Today and Wall Street Journal featured articles this past fall on the speaking business. Both are well focused on the opportunities in the industry and the success of motivational speakers . The WSJ article, Tales of Adversity Fire up the Staff, highlighted a number of speakers, including Chad Hymas who showcased at the last IASB meeting. "Corporations, universities and other organizations spend hundreds of millions a year on speakers. Top business and political leaders still command the highest fees...and a few similar orators with brave stories -- and a knack for tying their achievements to business themes -- compile enough well-paying dates to earn well into six figures themselves."
The USA Today article is a book review of the recently-released; Yes You Can, outlining a history of the speaking industry through to today to discover the behind-the- scenes of the motivational speaking business and the impact speakers have on audiences. The author interviewed a few IASB member bureaus including Leading Authorities and National Speakers Bureau. Pick up a copy if you haven't read this yet. It's a worthwhile read. While the author starts off skeptical, in the end he admits : 'Being a motivational speaker is one of few professions that truly attempts to help others improve their lives.

Copyright Infringement: What if Someone Is Stealing From You? By: John Dozier
As attorneys specializing in the litigation of Internet disputes, not a day goes by that we do not hear about a small online business getting ripped off through the theft of online content. Sometimes the property taken is a website or part of a website. Other times it is certain code or an e-book. But whenever it happens, you can be sure of one thing: It has value to the thief. Perhaps the perpetrator is a programmer taking a lazy “short-cut,” or someone looking to benefit from your optimized site by getting a more favorable indexed position on a major search engine. Of course, the most common type of infringer is one who tries to take your business away from you by using your own property. Let’s walk through a process you should implement in order to assess what your next step should be when you learn that your valuable content or property has been stolen.
