President's Message

Happy New Year!  I hope and trust 2007 was a success for you.

With a New Year come several new initiatives from IASB for the benefit of our members:

A New Code of Ethics - The Ethics Committee, chaired by Brian Palmer, has been moving forward to finalize the new and improved code.  A session is being planned for the convention surrounding the new language and its impact on our business environment. Watch for your new ethics code to arrive early this spring.

A New Website - Jim Montoya, our Executive VP, recently worked with an internet marketing services firm to update the look and feel of IASB’s web site.  If you haven’t already seen it, check it out!  It not only received an aesthetic facelift, but also has improved functionality as well.

A New Speaker List Resource -   Our Technology Committee, chaired by Jo Cavender, continues to refine and tune the IASB Speakers Directory, our members’ one-stop resource for up-to-date speaker materials maintained by the speakers' office.  The committee's discussions surrounding internet marketing will help IASB clarify its position and thinking on what have historically been both murky and thorny issues.

You'll continue to receive updates from IASB on making the most of your IASB membership and our new initiatives throughout the year.

And last but not least, program content for our  April convention in Chicago has been finalized and the line up is dynamite!  See Marcia and Darlene Snow’s report for more detail.

Make 2008 a great year, and see you in Chicago!

2008 CONVENTION:
Relate - Innovate - Perfrom!
Program Confirmations
By: Marcia & Darlene Snow,
Blue Feather Management
2008 IASB Convention Co-Chairs

The IASB 2008 Conference line up has been confirmed!  We have truly outstanding presenters including Marcus Buckingham, Dan Pink and Neil RackhamScott Klososky is making a repeat performance in the technology session, filled with new concepts and trends that will put us at the top of our game.   Peter Sheahan will not only be a panelist for the Global Session, but he will also lead the Business-Owners-Only pre-conference session – both are NEW additions to 2008.

Because we are having concurrent Pre-Conference sessions this year for the first time, we are renaming the original one from "Pre-Conference" to calling it "Hot Topics on Everyone's Mind" and this is open to everyone.  The Business Owners Only Pre-Conference session is self-explanatory and will be a forum for issues sensitive to owners in our current world of change.  Although both sessions are at no cost to you, we will be asking you to pre-register as time draws near.

We are disappointed to announce that Dale Irvin will not be participating this year due to a difficult scheduling challenge. However, we are thrilled that Tim and Kris O’Shea will be joining us and providing memorable convention coverage with their outrageous brand of humor.

April is approaching quickly… you won't want to miss this year’s event. Not only do you get to mingle with your colleagues in this fun, friendly and stimulating setting, but you will hear some of the most leading edge speakers in the marketplace today.

Thank you to all of those who contributed to our awesome line up of presenters!

Watch the IASB website and your email inbox for conference registration information and mark your calendar – April 24-26, 2008 at the Renaissance Chicago Hotel.

IASB Website Redesign

We’re proud to launch our newly designed website at www.iasbweb.org. Many members have commented on the fresh new look and ease of use. The new website creates a much better image for IASB and allows us to do more with it while remaining user friendly. If you have not already seen the site, take a look. More information on the new site functionality will be coming soon. We hope you enjoy it.

It's Unethical
by Jim Montaya, CAE
IASB Executive Vice President

We are learning of more and more bureaus posting exclusive speakers on their websites without permission from the bureau that holds the exclusive contract with the speaker. It is most unsettling when we learn a member bureau has done that.

The primary contact of every member bureau has signed the Member Affidavit agreeing to abide by the IASB Code of Professional Conduct. I will take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of the Code.

Under the “Overall” section of the current Code of Ethics, number 3 states, “Refrain from engaging in fraudulent, dishonest, immoral, and malicious or illegal acts.” And under the “Speaker” section, number 14 states, “Obtain permission from the speaker before using his/her name or their company name in bureau promotions.”

Obtaining permission from the speaker includes ALL speakers you are marketing and particularly those who have exclusive contracts with other bureaus. If you have speakers on your website or in any other marketing material without the speakers’ permission, then you are in violation of the IASB Code of Professional Conduct. I suggest you have someone review your website to be sure permission has been granted from all those speakers listed on your website. If the speaker is exclusive with another bureau, you should contact that bureau to be sure it is OK to list the speaker on your site.

Asking for forgiveness rather than permission is not appropriate. You know what is right and as an IASB member you are expected to operate your bureau at the highest level. Your signed affidavit says you have agreed to do so.

IASB WINS AT THE ISAE STAR AWARDS!
IASB Earns the Society’s Top Association Recognition

The STAR Awards named IASB for the Best Non-Dues Revenue Program of 2007 at their December 4, 2007 awards event. IASB was recognized for our Speaker Showcase and Featured Speaker of the Month opportunities.

Hailed as the "Oscars of Association World", the ISAE STAR Awards run by the Indiana Society of Association Executives is the leading statewide awards event honoring excellence in association and not-for-profit organizations and the work they do to further the industry.

"The ISAE STAR Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the association world in Indiana," said Leslie A. Murphy, executive director of ISAE. "IASB’s winning program is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."

Jim Montoya, IASB Executive Vice President said, “It is an honor to have IASB recognized by its peers in association management. Receiving the award for the Speaker Showcase and Featured Speaker of the Month programs is particularly gratifying as it is so unique. Not only does it provide non-dues revenue to the association, but it also provides a wonderful benefit to the member bureaus and at the same time it raises the awareness of the participating speakers among the IASB membership.

The 6th Annual ISAE STAR Awards received over 45 entries from associations around the state of Indiana. The awards banquet, held at The Mansion at Oak Hill in Carmel, also had record attendance, at 233 registrants.

IASB Dues Increases for New Members

Beginning January 1, 2008, dues for IASB membership increased to $600 per year for new member bureaus. For a number of years dues have been $500 and there has been a $200 new member initiation fee. The new member initiation fee remains unchanged.

Dues for current members will remain $500 annually when membership renewals are paid on time. Dues for bureaus that have been members for at least 1 ½ years are due on July 1st. When paid on or before July 1st, the dues would be $500. If dues are paid after July 1st, it would be $600. Please, make a note of this and be sure your dues money is set aside to renew your membership on or before July 1st. Membership renewal invoices will be mailed in early May.

If you have any questions, please contact Jim Montoya, IASB Executive Vice President or Pam Bernard, IASB Administrative Assistant. They may be reached at 317-328-7790 or jim@iasbweb.org and pam@iasbweb.org.
